Biosecurity measures in the prevention of diseases in bee colonies
08/04/2026
This apiary training is intended for registered beekeepers and those who have completed training for beekeeping. Participants should bring their own protective beekeeping equipment and gloves.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in an apiary on the upper courses of the Krka River. The workshop leader, Prof. Dr. Sc. Ivana Tlak Gajger, Head of the Laboratory for Bee Diseases at the Department of Biology and Pathology of Fish and Bees, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, will present biosecurity measures and practices in the prevention of bee colony diseases through practical examples in hives.
Practical training on biosecurity measures will consolidate the knowledge acquired in the classroom module held in 2023. In the meantime, beekeepers have had two seasons to improve their beekeeping techniques, and during the practical training in the apiary, they will improve their knowledge and practice of beekeeping. The emphasis will be on the prevention and treatment of bee colony diseases and on the correct way to take samples for laboratory analysis. The spring development is one of the most difficult periods in the life of a bee colony, so it needs to be supported to overcome difficulties as easily as possible.
Due to special conditions in the apiary, only registered beekeepers or persons who are trained in beekeeping can attend the workshop. To participate, please register at glasnogovornica@npk.hr. In case of adverse weather conditions, the workshop will be postponed.
The workshop is held as part of the Meetings with Local Residents, which focus on organic agriculture and production. These meetings are held continuously throughout the year and are intended for those who live and work along the Krka River. Between individual meetings, smaller thematic workshops or public forums are held, depending on the interest of the local community. The meetings have resulted in continuous open communication between the participants, with new acquaintances, the creation of business opportunities, and the start of new projects.
The workshop participants will gather in the center of Oklaj, near the playground (behind the Studenac store), on Saturday at 11 a.m.
