World Animal Protection Day Celebrated at Visovac: Learning How to Protect the Animal World
02/10/2026
To mark World Animal Protection Day, the Public Institute of Krka National Park has prepared an educational program for primary school students this year, set in the beautiful surroundings of Visovac Island.
On Friday, 2 October, students in grades 1 through 4 from the Dubravice and Rupe elementary schools participated in a workshop dedicated to the rich wildlife of Visovac and the Krka National Park. Through interactive activities, they learned about the animals inhabiting the area along the Krka River, their ways of life, and the importance of preserving nature and biodiversity. The program began with the students' arrival at the Remetić pier, from where they were transported to the island of Visovac; there, they were welcomed by Friar Tin Labrović, the guardian of the local Franciscan monastery, who introduced them to the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and his relationship with nature and all living beings.
The Krka National Park is home to an exceptionally rich wildlife. Thirty-one fish species inhabit the Krka River, including twelve endemic species, with the Adriatic trout and the marble trout being particularly notable. Numerous amphibian and reptile species live in the Park, including the endemic Dalmatian algyroides (blue-throated keeled lizard) and the sharp-snouted rock lizard. With as many as 230 bird species, the Krka National Park is one of the most valuable ornithological areas in Europe, while notable mammal species include the otter, wildcat, roe deer, and various species of bats.
The Krka National Park marks important dates dedicated to the preservation of nature specifically with children – through learning, exploration, and spending time in nature – because the best way for future generations to learn to protect nature is to get to know, understand, and come to love it. This year’s observance of World Animal Protection Day, held in the magical setting of Visovac Island, offered the perfect opportunity to do just that.
