With a view to optimising forest management in protected areas in the category of national park or strict reserve that fall under the responsibility of the nature protection sector, it is necessary to harmonise the preparation of planning documents.

As part of the project “Development of the Management Framework for the Natura 2000 Network Sites”, funded through the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion, the Public Institute of Krka National Park has commenced work on the development of the Forest Protection, Conservation and Restoration Programme, “Proposal Drafting Services for the Forest Protection Programme for Protected Areas within the Ecological Network in the Category of National Park and Strict Reserve, Gr 4 – Final Drafts of the Forest Protection, Conservation and Restoration Programme for the Krka National Park“ in cooperation with Pro Silva d.o.o., the contracted service provider for the activity.

Within the framework of the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014 – 2020, Specific Objective 6iii2: Establishment of a Framework for Sustainable Management of Biodiversity (Primarily the Natura 2000 Ecological Network), the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development has secured EU grant funding for projects that contribute to the achieving the biodiversity preservation objectives of the 2020 EU Biodiversity Strategy.

The provisions of the Nature Protection Act (NPA) (Art. 56(a) and Art. 140) set out the procedure for the preparation and adoption of management plans for the ecological network (EN) protected areas, while management of the areas located in forests and forest land is integrated into the forest management process in the manner specified by the provisions of the Forest Act, Ordinance on Forest Management, and the Forest Management Area Plans for the Republic of Croatia.

With a view to optimising forest management in protected areas in the category of national park or strict reserve that fall under the responsibility of the nature protection sector, it is necessary to harmonise the preparation of planning documents so as to ensure coordination of management activities with the activities carried out outside national parks and strict reserves, and to facilitate appropriate management efficiency assessment/comparisons. In addition to effective management of forest ecosystems as the main objective, specific requirements for the ecological network will also be integrated in forest protection programmes through management processes.

The forest programme specifies the activities in forests and forest land within protected areas in the category of strict reserve, national park, special reserve of forest vegetation, and forest park over a 10-year period.
