During the two-week stay in the field, the students had the opportunity to learn about archaeological field methodology, modern techniques for documenting finds, and a responsible approach to site protection, and also to gain valuable practical experience to complement the knowledge acquired during their studies.

The Klanac site belongs to a group of military facilities from the Roman period. It is an auxiliary military camp dating back to the late Republican and early Imperial periods, between 50 and 20 BC. This year's excavations are a continuation of previous campaigns, and were conducted with the aim of better understanding the appearance and development of the defensive ramparts and further collecting data that will help in the more precise dating and interpretation of the site.

During the excavations, valuable archaeological finds were found that testify to the presence of soldiers and their daily life in this area more than two thousand years ago. Among the discovered objects, fragments of pottery vessels from the time of active usage of the camp stand out, along with ten or so rivets from the soles of military shoes, which can be dated to the end of the 1st century BC. After being documented using modern methods, the excavated architectural structures were protected with geotextiles in order to preserve them for future research.

In addition to fieldwork, volunteers listened to brief lectures, attended educational workshops, and participated in expert discussions. Special emphasis was placed on learning about the cultural heritage of the Krka National Park, so program participants visited the Burnum Archaeological Collection in Puljane and the Roman military amphitheater in Burnum. Such a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience contributes to a better understanding of the ancient heritage and its importance to modern society.

Volunteer activities related to the Klanac site have once again shown how important it is to include young people in the investigation, protection, and promotion of the cultural heritage. Spending time in nature, working in an interdisciplinary team, and having direct contact with the archaeological site encourage the development of professional competence, responsibility, and awareness of the importance of preserving the heritage for future generations.

Given the successful results and the great interest of the participants, excavations at the Klanac site will continue in the coming years, with additional strengthening of the educational segment of the program and the inclusion of new generations of young researchers.

The volunteer program "The Klanac Site – archaeological excavations of an auxiliary Roman military camp in the area of the Krka National Park" brought together archaeology students and experts eager for new knowledge and experiences from April 16 to May 2, 2026.

[40

post-15868","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-volunteer-in-the-krka-np
["GET
