It was found that the community is characterized by a pronounced dominance of the invasive species of eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). Canostrini's Goby was recorded in the area downstream of the Skradinski Buk waterfalls, in habitats influenced by brackish water. Although a small number of individuals were recorded, its presence within two quadrants of the 1 × 1 km grid indicates a satisfactory population status and preserved habitat conditions.

Unlike the Canostrini's Goby, the Dalmatian barbelgudgeon has not been recorded in the Krka National Park area, which confirms the trend of its disappearance from the main course of the Krka River. Stable populations of this species are currently limited to the Čikola River in the Krka River basin, while new locations have also been identified in isolated bodies of water (Dobropoljci Ponds, Gabelin Lake). The absence of this species, despite the presence of suitable habitats in the Krka River, would indicate the influence of other factors, primarily invasive and predatory species, but also occasional pollution.

The research results show that the greatest pressure on the local ichthyofauna is exerted by invasive species, and that systematic monitoring, control of alien species, and the implementation of active protection measures are still necessary, including the possible repopulation of the barbelgudgeon species in the Krka River.

Photo: prof. dr.
