It represents the amount of greenhouse gases, most often expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), that our activities produce. Reducing this footprint is one of the key steps towards a more sustainable future.

Why is it important to understand your carbon footprint?

Knowing our carbon footprint helps us understand how our habits affect the environment and where we can make changes. Emissions are generated through energy consumption, transportation, food, the production of goods, and waste management. While an individual contribution may seem small, the sum of millions of such decisions has a large impact on the climate.

For tourist destinations and businesses, including those related to tourism, understanding and reducing emissions is particularly important as tourism plays a significant role in global greenhouse gas emissions: it is estimated that around 8% of total emissions are related to human activities.

Travel and its carbon footprint

Travel often accounts for a large portion of a person's carbon footprint. Air travel accounts for the largest share, but driving, staying in hotels, and cruising also contribute. For example, emissions from an airplane can vary from approximately 0.13 to 0.80 kg CO₂e per passenger kilometer, depending on the length of the flight and seat class.

This doesn't mean that travel should be avoided. Instead, it is possible to travel more responsibly:

Choose public transportation or rideshare when possible

Plan a longer stay instead of multiple short trips

Choose local products and services at the destination

Support destinations that invest in nature protection and sustainable tourism.

For visitors to protected areas such as the Krka National Park, awareness of the impact that travel has can further encourage them to behave more responsibly and aid in the preservation of natural features.

How to calculate your carbon footprint?

The first step towards reducing emissions is to measure them. There are a number of free online tools that can help you estimate your personal or business carbon footprint, such as:

ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator – for estimating emissions from air travel

myclimate Flight Calculator – for calculating emissions and the possible contributions to climate projects

Sustainable Travel International Travel Footprint Calculator – to estimate the emissions for the entire trip (flights, transportation, accommodation)

CarbonClick Personal Footprint Calculator – to estimate your personal carbon footprint.

Emission compensation

Some emissions are difficult to avoid completely. In such cases, it is possible to compensate for the carbon footprint (carbon offsetting) – by investing in projects that reduce or eliminate emissions, such as reforestation, the development of renewable energy sources, or the protection of ecosystems. One purchased carbon credit represents one ton of CO₂ that has been removed or prevented from entering the atmosphere.

Platforms that enable emissions compensation include:

myclimate

Atmosfair

CarbonClick

Sustainable Travel International.

Small steps, big changes

Reducing your carbon footprint does not mean giving up travel or a certain quality of life. On the contrary, it is a question of thoughtful decisions: more efficient energy consumption, more responsible transportation, and support for sustainable initiatives. Every change, no matter how small, contributes to the preservation of nature.

In our daily lives, almost every activity we do – from heating our homes and driving our cars to traveling and eating – results in greenhouse gas emissions

["post-14790","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
